Hello,

Well it is official. My new blog , Not Quite Nan's is up and running.
It would be lovely for you all to take a look.

While it has been good to have daleystar, it is a blog that has come to represent my old life somewhat and I need a fresh start. If this makes slightly no sense then please check out my new blog and read the 'About' tab/page and it should all fall into place.

I have really enjoyed receiving your comments, thoughts and your following/ship.

It would be great if you could follow my new endeavour, and the new life it represents.

Hello,
Long time no blog. A few things have had me otherwise engaged these last few months. Uni, J, life in general. It has put a great deal into perspective. I have had to make decisions, some easy, some hard, but all vital nonetheless.
I am changing the way I do things and this blog is one of the things that will be changing.
I am in the process of configuring a new blog and hope to launch it soon. It would be lovely if you could follow it they way you have followed this one.
So keep this in mind, not quite nan's, and I hope to see you soon.

Magazines are my weakness.
Not the gossipy ones (I never buy those, but do read them at the hairdressers), the glossy ones, filled with colour. Any that dont lecture me on what I should or shouldn't be eating. Those ones really irritate me...slightly off topic now.
I love design mags and craft mags, but am really sick of the 'nana' craft ones that are numerous in the newsagents.
Until this week when I was convienently wasting time loitering in the newsagency.

Both are UK magazines and are past their issue times of the 'July Issues'. But that makes no bother.

The BBC Homes and Antiques has quite a bit of the Antiques Roadshow in it, but this issue is all about Vintage finds, shops, and the people that love them. Best of all, there's a shopping section and the websites have been included - more computer shopping for me!

Mollie Makes is a colourful and up to the minute (yay no nana crafts and pastel-ly colours) magazine designed by very talented ladies who recognised that many of the craft magazines were a tad ol'fashioned. I am loving the designers creative spaces and the refashioning projects. This mag is definately one I will be keeping an eye out for again. Check out the Mollie Makes website here.

Here is something I sewed up the other day when I should have been studying for my Accounting exam. (Now having received my results back I see some serious study will be required for the next one!)

It was a simple project I have been meaning to do for ages. The letters were printed off the computer at a font size of 300, and the fabric is leftover scraps from the quilt top I have sewn for my bed - must get around to finishing that. The cushion was a pre-made one purchased from target for $10. The moose, well he's all the from Sweden; enjoying the sunshine and our climate.

Dream...sometimes its what we all need.

I have been a lucky girl this week. Somethings have been going my way and I have a Giveaway for you!

That's right, no more glue, tape, squished papers, lost brads and drawers full of bits & bobs (that happens in my house anyway!).

I started scrapbooking a few years ago and was all 'gung-ho' to start with but the time it took to create one paper seemed to wear on me. Ikea we will go, Ikea we will go...

I love Ikea. I make know secret of the fact. I have been known to spend a fair amount of time there...

But I do tend to forget how lucky I am to have my Ikea. You see I only live 1,2,oh - 3 sets of traffic lights away from Ikea Logan. In fact if I go the other way I'm only 4 round-abouts away too. (Obviously depending on my mood, depends on the way). And its really not my fault that I have to drive past it when I take J to kindy, when I come back from kindy, on the way back to kindy...well you get the idea.
I also have a tendency to purchase extra things when I go there. Its not a serious habit.

Seriously, I'm not as bad as my parents. They went in once for a mouse-mat and came home with a brand new lounge suite!

Something for me

As my days are filled with uni, J and all the other myriad of things that pop up and scream to be done (pay the car registration, 'oh its a fine day I really should wash all of the sheets', and the like); I found myself in the uni bookshop looking whistfully at stationary supplies when I spotted a notebook. Now it was an ordinary notebook - black covered, B5 size (I think!) and spiral bound, but it just called to be something more...
something that could be pretty like this...

So while J was watching 'Giggle & Hoot' on ABC2 - I swear they need to up Giggle's salary, the kids love him and he obviously loves what he does, but you would hope they pay him a lot to be silly, funny and kid-like - and I had a few quiet minutes when I should have been doing the washing-up, I whipped up this.

The fabric is one I have had for a while (possibly an Alexander something 'Starling'). The blue was out of my stash container and the sewing only took 5 minutes if that. In fact I think the iron took longer to heat up than my total sewing time.

And I truly believe that there is nothing 'like a brand new notebook'. Even when its predecessor still has a few pages left.

That's what is has been for me. The standing still in a whirl of emotion, like that deer in the preverbial headlights or Marilyn as the case may be.
I wish I could say I have a better excuse for not posting for so long (and it seems from looking over my previous posts that all I do have is excuses for my lack of words). I wish my excuse was an epic reason, but in the cold hard light of the afternoon it was fear with a capital F.

Unfounded fears it would seem also and to prove my point I'll bare my soul and show you.

The longer that I didn't blog, more followers I would lose and further emphasize my fear that I and my blog is a small waste of space. The reality: I still have the same amount of followers and I'm not a waste of space ( I dont have major esteem issues, its just when I get tired I hear the voice of my ex-husband in my head - wasn't really a supportive husband; note the 'ex' part.
The time I was staying away from the blog-o-sphere was spent studying, studying, studying, and that was what was best for my future. The reality: I learnt that all study and no play makes me a very cranky girl.
That I could be the wonder-mum that I hear about, and feel is shoved on all mothers universally as the 'idea we can have it all'. The reality: All mothers suffer with mother-guilt (its not just me) and that its okay that I'm a sole parent with a cute little (he would make me say big) boy.

So it seems that my three fears are unfounded, as I probably knew they would be...

Tardy blogger

Hi,
It's me...the tardy blogger...the one who says she'll blog and then gets into bed and says, stuff-it I'll do it tomorrow...and never does!
Uni is well and under way. After days at uni, and then J and mummy stuff I just haven't blogged. Sorry!

I have taken photo's lately with the intention to blog, and one millenia they will be posted.

Right now its off to a law class, then home to J, then read some more textbooks...but the intenstion to blog is there...don't keep your fingers crossed, they may get arthritic waiting.
(Soonish...I promise).

What I saw on Friday

Friday was a visual day, not in the 'ooh-look-at-that-way', but in more of a 'this-is-what-I-saw-day'.

Lots and lots of reading.

Then there was the 'oh-I'm-at-Spotlight-how-did-that-happen?'

I have been after a cape pattern for ages! I know it looks historical, but imagine it without the fur detailing - normal collar for me. None of the braid trimming, and in a red or camel wool, lined in a bright colour, of course.

And the 'gosh-that-comes-out-with-water-right?'

What I saw Friday...

Now that I travel to the city (Brisbane) nearly every day, I see so many things that make me stop and think for a moment. (I am a Law student, so my brain is only allowed brief periods of non law pondering. Oh how I love the cramming, and its only week 1).

So this friday without my camera I am forced to google image for my sights.

After ordering my large lactose-free chai latte from the Campos hole-in-the-wall (best, by the way), I spotted an older man walking with poise and purpose wearing a bow tie.

I wonder, where was he going? Was it to be an important meeting? Or was it an affair to remember, of better times past?

Betty and the Dot Skirt

Betty needed a new outfit.
oh alright...I needed a new outfit, and if we're going to be technical it was a more wanting a new outfit.
Here is the skirt I made out of my other purchase from the lovely people at Equilter in the US.
Its 100% cotton fabric and sold off the bolt at 54'' wide - super good for matching up the print and having some fabric leftover for another project yet to be determined.
The skirt is another pattern from the UK magazine SewHip. The original pattern makes a sash bow to go through the belt loops, but with this I am picturing either a red or black patent leather belt.
The skirt is fully lined and has 6 black buttons down the front.
I'm really pleased with this effort as I took my time sewing it...oh alright, it had to be sewn in 10min stages to fit around my time with J.
All in all, I'm thinking its super cute and will look even better with a pair of killer heels.
Hmm...more shopping...

I wish a good window display could fix many things.

The dressmakers' novels

I've started a really good book. It's got all of those things that make a great escape read...drama, intrigue, character strength, the classes of Victorian England...dressmaking!
I've never read anything by the talented Posie Graeme-Evans (MacLeod's Daughters' fame and author of the Innocent, Exiled, Beloved novels). But, even though I'm only a good two thirds of the way through the book, I am captivated by the heroine and her skills. Its such a delight! Its only a newish release, but I couldn't recommend more 'The Dressmaker'.

Speaking of dressmaking novels; also titled 'The Dressmaker' is Rosalie Ham's novel set in country Australia. I read this book last year and it was captivating and humourful. When a book starts with a cross-dressing country policeman you know its a winner!

But me, ever waiting for the post man (yes I was buying online again) is my soon to be own copy of 'The Secret Lives of Dresses' by Erin McKean. This has received great reviews both in the press and in the blogging community - thanks Kat of Kats Creations. I cant wait to enjoy it, please hurry mister postman.

Betty & the 'Yard Sale Skirt'

I have finally made something from the gorgeous book by Heather Ross 'Weekend Sewing'! I bought this book back in 2009 but have just never found fabric that I was in love with to make one of her numerous patterns. Until...one night on the Internet I happened upon (ok, someone else had a link) Equilter. This is a great website with loads and loads of fabrics. And again with the USD and AUD being nearly even, it makes shopping from the US all the more affordable.

I just love this fabric. Its called 'LoveBirds Sweethearts' by Michael Miller Fabrics. When I saw it I knew straight away that it would work for this skirt. The skirt is sewn in six panels and with the waistband and ties makes a lovely wrap-around-skirt. I must admit to being a bit dubious on the complete outcome as I don't usually have great luck with wrap-around clothes - well as it turns out maybe just mass produced ones. 'Cause this one I very much adore!
(And possibly so does Betty).

Buttons & Burlesque

Is there anything more soothing than playing with buttons.

As a kid I loved playing and sorting buttons in my mum's botton box.
Up until yesterday my collection was kept in a vase for all to see, but know they have their own box. Its a wooden tea-cady with divided compartments - I love when others have clean-ups and clear-outs!

On another note; I saw 'Burlesque' . Amazing! I know it didnt have the greatest reviews by the critics, but all the same; the music was great and the costumes were fantastic. I wish my sewing skills (and body type) were that advanced. I'm not a Cher fan bt any means, however I thought she was great - even with the...ahem...botox and etc. If music and dancing is your scene, or you want a nice story and an escape from the world, go and see it. It was definite entertainment.

Introducing Betty

Betty

I have someone special I would like you to meet.

Her name is Betty and she's new to the family.

Walking along Latrobe Tce in Paddington today a sign caught my eye.

'Dress making mannequins for sale'.

Now what's a girl supposed to do when faced with a sign like that?

I decided to see who these ladies were and if they would like a new family.

And suddenly, she and I just clicked. Perfect. Firm friends from the very first meeting.
Her name is Betty and she's going to fit right in here.

I have it on good authority she used to be 'Claudette', but its a woman's prerogative to change.

In fact, J is already quite taken with her and helped her settle in with a getting-to-know-you dress-up session.

My First Grown-up Dress/ A Whole Lot of Colour

I'll start with the colour first.
I saw this bright cotton sateen at Spotlight a few months ago. I loved the colours but not the $17.99 p/m price tag. Low and behold when I went last week to check out the sale fabrics, there was 'my' fabric. And at a much nicer price of $5 p/m. Yes thank you. I'll have 1.5 metres please. Only to get to the checkout and find the roll scanned at $3.50 p/m...better make that 2 metres, please!!

I just love this fabric. It reminds me of the beautiful wall papers designed by Florence Broadhurst in the late 1950's and 60's.

I also bought a Kwik.Sew pattern (3598). I've been on the hunt for a simple shift (dress) for ages, and this seemed a good start to making my first dress for me - even if I was a little nervous about inserting a zip. I cant fault the pattern. It gave clear and concise directions and pictures (which I love - definitely a visual person). The only problem came from me. I am not a standard size. I know, find a woman who is, right! So I had to amend the pattern slightly to be smaller in the top (small bust, blame breast feeding) and larger hips (cant blame them on J I had them before he came along). The bust darts were no problem to amend, but the waist was then too big and the back gaped a little. Running in a little bit at the sides and adding two darts in the back parallel to the zip fixed the problem. The result; My very first grown-up dress.

I am so excited at the moment. It seems selfish at this time with all of the devastation from the floods to be happy; but I am.

QTAC (organising body who distributes the university offers) is at Milton in Brisbane and was badly affected by the flood waters, so it took longer for the offers to be released. Ironically the offers were due to be released on the 13th of January at 1am and the building was flooded at 12am. Timing or what?

With thousands of Queensland's waiting to see if the University of their choice offered them a study place, QTAC worked like a machine to get the website (and building) operational asap.

And the result - I'm going to QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Brisbane - who got a little flooded also - to study a double degree! Bachelor of Business & Bachelor of Laws! Its going to be hard, but so very worth it in the end!

What I did on Wednesday

...washing, tidying, obsessing, laughing, near crying, staring at the constant news updates of the flood, cleaning up wee at the library; its a normal day really.

Today I decided to try and be proactive. J has been going stir-crazy being stuck indoors with all of this rain, so on our first day of sunshine in weeks we did some washing (yay to hanging it outside) and headed off to the library. We picked out some books and J listened to the story-time lady for all of about 5 minutes til he decided climbing over the furniture was a more productive use of his time. Well, he is 3 and a half! After repeatedly assuring me he didn't need the toilet, his little barriers gave out in the non-fiction section as I was looking for some new sewing books. Note to those who use the Logan North Library: Watch out near the Gardening books, there might be a wet patch. Though I did find out how absorbent my library bag was (very as it turned out) and I pounced on the puddle before it soaked through. So after soaking up the puddle and removing J's shoes we headed home for a change of pants. I swear, the one day I don't take the 'nappy bag' (I wasn't going to be long, honest) is the day we actually need it!

Off to the bank to get a cheque for the solicitors and then to get some groceries that I had neglected (ok, so I forgot) the last time I went to Coles. Groceries got I headed to the newsagent to check out the 'glossies'. I love magazines almost as much as books and was truly convinced I needed the latest Instyle or whatever else was new (I draw the line at the tabloid ones - New Idea etc). When I happened on these two.

Now I have been eyeing off 'Frankie' for some time but never bought it, and for some reason today it called to me. No word of a lie I swear it said my name. Or was that J yelling that he had found a Toystory calendar?
As for the other mag, 'Slow', I liked the tag line; 'For those who think life's to fast'. A quick flick proved it to be a prospective read.

And the rest of my day? Well that left playing with J (laughing), watching 'Little Einsteins' (gotta love borrowing kids DVDs from the library), dinner, and obsessing over the length of my hair.

I am trying to grow it out from the pixie cut I had for all of last year. I do this every couple of years - grow it out I mean, and then just when it gets to a good length I hack it off again. At the moment its at the stage where its too short to do anything with but pin the fringe back; and too long for it to sit flat with the aid of all hair products known to man!

It feels exceptionally selfish to have had a 'normal' day. So many other Brisbane-ites are doing it tough with the flood waters rising and their homes being cut-off, and in many cases swallowed whole. I live on the southern side of Brisbane up high and nice and dry. All of the facilities around me are still in full swing; shops, buses, petrol stations. For us so far it has been more of an inconvenience with the constant rain and squelchy ground. A friend of mine is stuck with the river rising and cutting him (and many others) off from the rest of the city.I know, right, and I'm still obsessing about the length of my hair.

One excited boy and a new year of knitting

This wet week saw myself, J and his grandparents (my Mum & Dad) visit The Workshop Railways Museum in Ipswich for their Thomas the Tank Engine exhibition. J has been on at me for weeks to visit once he saw a photo of Thomas in the paper. So on a very wet Friday off we trundled (via the ghastly Ipswich motorway upgrade - aquaplaned, Yay, not).
It was an interesting day. Lots of families, very excited kids, and many, many engines from the legendary island of Sodor. But I must admit the man playing the Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt for you Thomas diehards) was worth his stuffed fat suit in gold. All of the kids were speechless when he arrived in his top hat and waistcoat, many adults too, me thinks!
Lots of running around was had by all. J didnt know what to look at first, second or third. And myself, I ran to keep up to him! He got to drive a train, play on some of the engines (Thomas, Donald and Douglas) and had his photo with each of the different engines.

This week has also seen my start my first knitting project for the year and I am uber pleased its not another scarf. I found a great free pattern on Ravelry for an easy all-in-one short sleeved cardi. Now just to keep going in adding the length, and remembering which row I do plain or purl. (Or is that garter and stocking stitch.

First project for 2011 - in the making

'Start as you mean to go on'. Is that the right saying? I need to apply that to so many areas of my life.
But for now I'll apply it to just my crafting. If you've seen the weather in Brisbane lately you'll see we have had rain, rain, rain. Thankfully not as much as those in the flood ravaged north and west (Rockhampton, Emerald, Theodore etc)but enough to limit going out anywhere and enough to dr
ive all kids mad with cabin fever; and a fair few of the adults too.

This is the queen version of the quilt I made J last year - 'Yellow Brick Road pattern from Atkinson Designs. For me I chose to incorporate striped and floral fabric. I love so many of the fabrics from Kaffe Fasset, Philip Jacobson and Martha Negley with their big floral motifs in bright modern colours (no Nana fabric here!).

With all 90 squares sewn up it was layout time in the living room, but first I had to move J and his playdough equipment.
Note to self: Perhaps not an entirely smart idea to allow playdough play on carpeted area. Even with the use of a tray and small table.

J was happy to oblige the move as long as he could play with my pins. I swear I'll make a crafter out of him yet!

Now to sew it all together.

The year that was 2010

Wow, another whole year gone.
This year for me has been an eventful one. It has seen a lot of changes, a lot of events and tears of both sad and happiness.
2010 meant a new start for me, a chance to move forward and create a different life from that of 2009. 2010 was the year I enrolled in Tafe (Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation) - and graduated! It was a year I met new friends trying to move their lives in a better direction than than of their past. Friends who accepted me with all of my issues and were there when I needed support.

2010 was they year my broken marriage was deemed officially over with an even more official looking divorce certifcate (yes you really do get a certifcate) than that of my marriage cert from 2001. Happily it saw my beautiful boy J turn 3; and devestatingly saw his father take him for an access visit and refuse to return him until ordered by a court six weeks later. We are always told children are resilient, and I have to say after the year I have had in and out of the court system (and it's still ongoing) my pride in J's ability to be a courageous and loving boy despite the upsets has grown ten-fold..

2010 saw the start of many art, sewing and craft projects; both failed and successful. My only regret on this front is that I made more than I took photo's of. I finished 3 quilts, 2 outfits, numerous softies, bags and gifts alike. I bought countless magazines and a few select books of projects to complete when I have 'more' time. - Note to self: hello, you're a parent; there is no 'more' time.
So what will 2001 bring?
Hopefully a university offer in January (watch this space I'll let you know), a final court hearing and custody sorted in February and 'more' time for the things that truely matter: J, friends and family.

Its that time of night where the temperature gets cooler and the house is silent, that I get to play on Blogger changing templates and adding thingy's. (Those widget-y thingys etc). I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it. Thank goodness for Google and its searches for 'help' websites.

Zine Finds - bespoke

I'm sure by now the sad news around the blogging community that 'Mixtape' has come to an end is not new news. It will be sad not to have Mixtape to read over - but best wishes and great thanks are due to Justine for producing a great zine that went around the world.
So on the hunt for a non-commercial, non-mass-produced, craft-creative inspiration I found a new zine called *bespoke*. Its a great zine and the creation of Jess of epherielldesigns. A local gal dedicated to creativity and supporting the micro-business community. Issue 1 is full of interviews with crafty types, plus projects and more. Wonderfully designed its perfect to slip into a handbag for a quick read when you're waiting for the bus/train etc. (Well its in my handbag for that purpose - some 'me' time).

I really think I've outdone myself with this photo. Its truely the worst one I've taken to date. Everyone was out and I had to take it in the mirror. It took me ages to work out how to change the flash type and even then it still looks awful. But, in my defence, it is a sewing project I finished! I'm not really all that confident to make clothes for myself (or others). Give me a pattern for a softie, quilt, or stitchery and sure I'll bang away at it. I tend to use delay tactics when personal sewing is called for. Oh look, what's that over there...
But this time I perservered and am pretty pleased with the results.
The skirt is called the 'Tartan bow skirt (aptly enough because the people of Sew Hip magazine;issue 20; made theirs out of Tartan). I found some really beautiful cream with yellow roses and grey/green-ery at Spotlight and figured I'd just have a go! I really enjoyed making this skirt. It is a gathered skirt with a bow/sash detail and buttons down the front, all topped off with some cream lining. (It comes to just above my knee and looks good with a sleeveless-singlet type top.)

I've also finished making a dress out of a jersey type material, but I'll wait for someones else to take that photo of me instead.

Tafe has finished and while I wait for the January 13th round of Uni offers I can finally pick up a book I want to read for me!
Dont you just love when you go to the library and find books that you know you will enjoy. I'm a sucker for thick novels and coffee table books, so I was very happy when I found these four. (A call from the library tells me I have 2 novels waiting to collect too - 'The Boyelyn Inheritance' by Philipa Gregory and Kate Moreton's 'The Forgotten Garden'). Not to forget my current read, Matthew Reilly's 'The Five Greatest Warriors'.
My way to enjoy any book; a piece of homemade shortbread and a cuppa' tea.

Internet Finds - Urban Threads

Hi, so I may be 'behind-the-times' sometimes, but had to show you this great site! Apologies if you have already seen/know about it, but I had to post - 'cause it rocks!

The crew over at Urban Threads really have their stuff together (definately NOT your nana's embroidery patterns). Think sweet yet strong, feminine yet amazon, supernatural but not twilight, ink and skin, roller-derby meets cotton candy (before she takes you down), true vintage not band-wagon yuppies, and more contradictions than I can think of. So, please, take a look. Patterns for both machine and hand embroidery, digital stock art, and as they suggest something a bit different that just might be for ink.

An apron, three bags of sugar, one happly little boy!

Today was a baking day in my house. So once the shortbread was cooling and the bread loaf baking in the oven; J and I - mainly J - made his first ever batch of rocky road.
Last night in a burst of sewing adrenaline I whipped up (it literally took 15 minutes from cut to sew) an apron for J. Using one of his t-shirts as a rough guide for width, I added extra to the length, I used an off cut from the mexican oilcloth I bought earlier in the year. Digging into the 'Mary Poppins' craft box I came up with some green pre-made bias binding and some twill tape that was recycled from an old electric blanket! I must say I am pretty pleased with the results.

So with a step ladder for J to reach the bench comfortably, he patiently pulled apart all of the mini-marshmallows while I cut the jubes with scissors. Add both of those with a generous amount of coconut and some dark chocolate melts melted and we have J's Rocky Road.

I think he was quite proud of his work, what do you think?

(I'm gonna have a hyper kid later I can just tell!)

I thought I'd show you some small pretty presents I have been working on for a couple of great girls I have met at Tafe this year. They have been so great to me and I love an excuse to hand make gifts. Each box contains one felt rose brooch. These flowers are a sinch to make and always look so good. I always get comments when I wear my burgandy one. I hope they'll like them.

Back again. Wanted to show the pretty things I got online. (Thank you GFC and the low US dollar). These things I bought from fabric.com and for the nice price of US$60. Had to pay a little in shipping but the fabric more than made up for that once I received the parcel.

The charm square packs are both Moda and cost about US$9 each (loving the William Morris range) and how could I resist the Amy Butler fabric. The first is 'Daisy Chain - Wildflowers Rose' US$8.98 per yard, the second is 'Daisy Chain - Mosaic Rose US$8.98 p/y and the beautiful third, 'Love - Tumbling Roses Tangerine' US$8.98 p/y also.
Now to find the time to make them into something pretty!

Hi, its a quarter to ten on a saturday night. It's quiet outside, J is asleep, revision work for Tafe nearly completed, and hot gluten free bread just out of the oven. But those are just today (well, tonight really). I've been spending again! 'What's new?' is the usual reply. Well with this exchange rate being so good against the US greenback I thought I would try my luck with buying from the US. So I held my breath parted with some dosh and four days later (yes, you heard right, 4 days! and two of those were a weekend. There must have been a plane waiting for my order) my parcel arrived. Lovely charm squares, and a pile of Amy Butler fabric straigt to my house from the state of Georgia. I'll post some pics and the web address when the light is better and I actually take my camera out of the drawer!

Hello,
I've finally fnished something! I should be doing asignments and studying for exams, but between that and having the flu, sharing it with J and more and more court drama (yes it's all still ongoing) I needed a break. Whilst a holiday would have been nice funds didnt quite stretch to it, (FYI: Legal counsel is expensive, but truely worth it for having J at home with me) so I started some graduation presents for two people at Tafe who have been really great friends this year.

Not the best photo's but one day I'll get to practice more with my camera and hopefully it will look more professional!

New Book, New Buy!

Hi, wow I must be setting a personal record. I think this makes the third post this month. I am trying to be diligent, so I'll keep my fingers crossed I keep posting.

Speaking of posting of the mail kind, I have been buying again! You know how much I love Amy Butler; that woman is brilliant! Her patterns are good to follow and her fabrics - divine!!. So when I heard that she has a new book out I scrambled to the Book Depository to get me a copy. If you haven't looked at this book website yet, you must. The prices are VERY reasonable and you don't have to pay postage, even better.

So I paid my money and in about 7 days I had my new Amy Butler book "Style Stitches" (and a collection of the 'True Blood' books - what can I say, I have replaced my Gossip Girl addiction with True Blood). This book does not disappoint. There are 12 bag patterns with a number of variations to them so in the end its 26 different bags. The only trouble I have now is which one to make first. Ooh, that means I can buy more fabric, and the Brisbane Craft Show is next month...
NO, must focus on finishing all of my Tafe assignments, but after that... my sewing machine is gonna get a workout!

Trying to Knit

I have just finished a great read. 'The Friday Night Knitting Club' by Kate Jacobs. I found it a delight to read, the perfect book for bed! Inspired as such I have pulled out my knitting - Lovely alpaca yarn in red - to try and finish it. Its my third scarf to date, but the one I am finding the most difficult. I'm doing plain and pearl, but say 12 rows at a time so you get a bubbly striped effect every couple of inches. All was good except I keep forgetting how to do it, and then I have to pull rows out as the front then becomes the back, and so forth. Humph! But I'll perservere, I have to, cause I want to learn to crochet before the weather gets too hot.

Just Plain Gorgeous - Bulimba

HI, I'm trying to discipline myself to blog more frequently so here's hoping I stick back with it! Today was such a beautiful day that J and I went to Oxford St, Bulimba, to play, shop and enjoy the day. We started at the park, which J loves, and after that headed up to Mary Ryans' for a well earned cuppa and cake. Two, yes two, baby cino's later J, my sister and T headed to check out the shops. It has been so long since I have been to Bulimba and have missed what you can find there. There is a gorgeous new shop just opened aptly named 'Just Plain Gorgeous', by that clever woman behind Beach Vintage Blog. I just want to say how impressed I was with this shop and how relaxed it was to be there. J was even given some ribbon to tie up his balloon as it kept getting away from him. (Note: If you're going to blow up a balloon for your child from a 'take a free balloon' dish (Mary Ryans') make sure you have something to tie it to!) I came away with a very pretty cup and 2 metres of mexican oilcloth very reasonable at $14 per metre. I have no idea what I'm going to make with them but when do you need a reason for more supplies!

Apologies again! for my lack of blogging. I've had some pretty intense family drama's happening over the last 2 months regarding J and I just havent been up to/or remembering to blog. Tafe is going well, thank goodness I have had that to do nearly every day, it has helped to keep some normalicy in my life.
Ok, rant aside, I haven't really done much crafting over the last months. My hexagons are still an ongoing project. I joke that I'll still be doing that when I retire! In the last few days I've been looking over my crafting magazines and hoping for time to start new projects. It must be the spring weather approaching, my fingers are itching to start something!

Hello all,

I have been extremely lax with my efforts to blog for the last 3 months. I blame Tafe work and life things, but the reality is was all down to me to blog! (and I didn't).
The holidays have begun and I have about 3-4 weeks of no assignments or class work, and am feeling at a bit of a loss. It has been so long since I have crafted. I pulled out my hexagons yesterday and it has been so long since I have done any work on them, I almost didnt recognise them.
So in order to give me the kick-start I need to get back in the crafting game, I am going to the Textile Show being held in the Brisbane Convention Centre on friday to admire and get ideas (oh alright, and to spend some money). I'll post once I've been and spent up on lovely things!!

Finally Finished

I am in shock! I havent posted for so long. Tafe is going awesome-ly (is that a word?) and I have met so many new friends.
But on the holidays - yay a week off - I fnally got some serious sewing fnished. I had started a quilt for 'J' at the end of last year and I have been itching to finish it. And I have!!

Its an american pattern by Atkinson Designs called 'Yellow Brick Road'. I fell in love with the pattern when I saw it completed at a craft shop and knew it would serve both 'J' and me. The pattern comes with instructions for 6 sizes, from baby to king size. I completed the single for 'J' and it is huge. It comes over the sides of his single bed much like a bed spread. So it is large enough to roll under you and tangle in - so comfy for winter. I have found that many quilt patterns only sat on the top of the bed so the minute you rolled one side of you got cold.

For 'J' I used bright coloured fat quarters (the whole thing bar border and backing is from fat quarters cut into various squares and rectangles) sunfowers, animals, alphabet and gepmetric designs. When I do mine later on I am going to use half stripes and half floral - think Amy Butler and Kaffe Fasset prints. I am in love with their fabrics.

So here it is , hope you like it. I am proud of my effort, and it was all worth it when 'J' exclaimed 'Its all for me?'. Yes my darling it is.

I have just come from seeing Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'! It was fantastic. The colour, the sets the costumes. Oh and the added bonus of Johnny Depp's brilliance added to the mix. All I can say is that I absolutely loved this movie. The underlying themes of empowerment and strength really hit home with me - oh and the Johnny Depp bits, um did I say that again? Cant help myself hehe.
Please go and see this movie if you need some escapism or if you just love Johnny Depp (there I go again!).

Sorry so long from the last post. I new I would be busy with Tafe and J but whoa so so so busy!!
So last Thursday when I was in my computer studies class, I got to look at my fellow blogger blogs! Yes I had finished my work and was waiting on the next instructions so I thought I would check things out.
When I had a look at Kat's blog I saw she had a gorgeous new recipe for Honey Jumble slice. Now I LOVE the honey jumble bic's but as a coeliac I cant eat them, so when I saw Kat's yummy photos I knew I had to give it a go. All I did was substitute the plain flour for Gluten Free plain flour (orgran) and baked away.
So awesome! So yummy! Thanks so much Kat. Though I think my photo doesn't do the slice justice. My dad was pushing me to cut it before the icing set!

So sorry for the delay

Hello fellow bloggers. I am so sorry that it has been over 2 weeks since I have last blogged. Please hear my confession.

I have started my tafe course and am suddenly learning that I really do need another couple of hours in the day. Get up, do mummy things, drop off at kindy, travel to tafe, be at tafe, travel home from tafe, pick up at kindy, do more mummy things, bedtime - his not mine (I wish), try and start homework, go to bed. Phew! I am suffering withdrawls from not having peeked my favourite blogs.

I have also have a couple of weeks of having "bad news" days. As you know I am now a single mum after separating from my husband, well a bomb dropped the other day. I was asked if we could get divorced any quicker as he has found a woman he wants to marry! Sorry this isnt Vegas buddy, you have to wait the full 12 months. As you can imagine my thought process has been kind of sent spiriling.

A good friend of mine is going through a tough time. What has started as a lump has culminated in major surgery and will require chemo and radium. It sure puts my problems in perspective. But the pain is still there, no one thinks that after 11 years together it could come crashing down - yes I got married really young.

I didnt intend for this to be a sob story or a bitter diatribe. I'm a realist I know when things cant be mended. So thank you for reading this entry. Sometimes saying it out loud can help. It doesnt ease it, but it does help - laughs.

Oh only in a city can you see things such as these. I am studying at SBIT and in amongst all of the lovely new buildings and eateries is this gorgeous church building. It is a lovely reminder of things past.

I'm a student again!

Well 12 years after I graduated from my senior schooling, I'm going back to school. Well TAFE to be more precise. After the year I went through in 2009 I am finally learning to put myself first. So in order to do that and make my life what I think I want it to be ('cause that makes sense!) I need to do a 1 year course to get into a University/TAFE program. I have always wanted to study architecture or design, so this is my starting point.

1- Enrol at TAFE in Certificate IV Adult Tertiary Preparation (its basically doing year 11 and 12 to get an up-to-date ranking/OP - they dont last for ever. I have my (gulp) 1998 Op Cert but apparently it's only current for about 3 years.

2- Study and do well in this course. So "J" has had his kindy days ammended to fit it with my new class shedule.

3- Graduate in November 2010. Wow when I type that it doesnt seem so far away.

4- Apply to the Uni's and TAFE and see where that takes me!

Phew! I think I am going to be a busy bee this year. Hopefully in the non-study time I will be able to do some crafting. I really need to start that baby quilt for the mama due in August..

As I said before: New Day, New Year, New Decade - Fresh start.

hello again, I must be setting a record for me. I am up to my third post of the week and its only Tuesday!

I forgot to say the other day about my bargain hunt that I managed to pick up a copy of Cathy Kelly's new book "Once in a Lifetime" for only $5. Yay to me! This book is her latest, being released in the later part of 2009. It still has the price sticker on the back for $36.50, and the spine has yet to be broken. I really enjoyed this book it was exactly what I needed to read at the moment. She is a talented writer and even though her books are classed as 'chic-lit', I found this one quite poetic and tackling some real issues.

Anywho, the quotes I hear you say - I have been trying to remember to write them down when I come across them. But with cheeky "J" and all that goes with him (and other responsibilities) I always say I will jot them down - but never do! So here they are (the first of many).

Shiny finds

I think that there is an unwritten rule in the universe for when you drop off donations to a charity shop you are obliged to enter and purchase. I am sure it is in the stars. It must be. Or else I have a compulsion to give away and then fill the space immediately. The star comment I think is a nicer touch!

So off I went giving little man clothes (he grows so quickly) and various other bits and pieces and then found something for myself.

I took one look at this coffee pot and knew it had to come home with me. And at a price of $6.50 how could I refuse. Oh and the silver spoon - 20c. These spoons are so handy for measuring and serving as it is a proper tablespoon. So on Saturday night out came the silver pot and the cleaner, and I rubbed one side to see if it would shine. And it did! As you can see from my atrocious photo - I should have turned the flash off, hey, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I love making baby presents, and I am so very lucky that I have two babies on the way to sew for. Before you get all excited - no its not me! One is so very new that it is still a secret - ssshh. The other is a baby boy due in only a couple of weeks. I love the little ones and hope to get a cuddle shortly. Before you start saying "ooh, clucky much" no I dont want anymore myself. "J" is all I need. I had one of those difficult pregnancies full of sickness and pain (lots of hospitalisation and giving up work and being bored on the couch). So I am happy with my little man and thank the fates he was a strong healthy babe.

So back to the making part. I couldnt wait to make the bumble bee from Melanie (of Melly & Mee) 'Kaleidoscope'.

She/He is so cute.

Next project is to make the beautful bumble bee cot quilt for the 'secret' baby once the mama has been given the all clear!

A New Day, A New Year, A New Decade.

Well the new day, year, and decade are here. It all came in peacefully with the sleepy/lazy/overcast vibe that can only be descibed as contentment (at the mo - "J" is asleep!)

Now I am not a fan of the "New Year's Resolutions" that usually abound but I think in light of the past couple of years being eventful - sad, wierd, etc - I would start the new decade with a different outlook. So here it is:

* A stronger spirit
* A resolved mind
* A loving home
* A nurtured soul.

And if all of this sounds a bit 'other worldly' then so be it.

A new day, a new year, a new decade = A new beginning.

At night, once "J" is settled in bed, I switch on my laptop (because doing it it bed makes it even more a luxury) and . . . . .

A Belated Merry Christmas

Hello, I hope all have had a great christmas.

Ours was a small gathering, a cold lunch and a rainy/slightly sunny day. The roads were quiet, the birds were silent and in our home presents were opened. As expected "J" was spoilt by all and loved ripping the paper off everyone's gifts. He tired himself out and while he (and grandad) napped, us girls watched "Miracle on 34th Street".

Also yesterday my swap parcel arrived from the very lovely Kate of Sewpatchwork - all the way from Middlesex in England. It was such a treat to have the parcel arrive. And look at what she made! So many apologies for not blogging for the last week or so. This time of year is getting quite hectic with kindy christmas party and last minute shopping. Plus we have had a weird sickness around the home too. Everyone is so tired and feeling 'icky'. Not sure if it is a bug or just the 'end-of-year' wind down.
I have seemed to have lost my 'blogging mojo' though I think it might be returning.

Crafty Ladies' Christmas Lunch

Its that time of the year when things roll to a close and the world goes crazy for 'christmas' lunches. So we had one too! And the best bit, we have a secret santa!
Yay, I love making things (of that you have no doubt - as you are looking at my blog) however, making things for others is always a treat. Although there is always slight trepidation that the receiver may not like it.

I made my secret santa lady a bag made of the 1950's repro fabric in yellows and blues. Sorry I didnt think to take a photo before I wrapped it, and then I wasn't going to unwrap it to take a photo.

My received present is a beautiful wine coloured satin box with an inlay of embroidery on the lid. I will take photo of it in the sun as the colours get a little bit lost in the fake lighting of my home.

The Christmas Lunch was a success to as all 23 of us - yep that many - dined for about 2-3 hours on beautiful meals, decadent desserts and lingering coffee and tea.

I promise to blog more in the future, but with christmas approaching - and the weather being so hot 35 degrees, I am tending to opt for finding the coolest place in the house, rather than sitting at the table on the computer. Sorry.

Enjoy the lead up to christmas. If your house is anything like mine this time of the year seems to run on warp speed.

Cranky face

I dont know what is wrong with me today. I am starting to suspect it could be in the air.

"J" has been grizzly all weekend, with a show stopper today also. I think he is growing again, 'cause when he does all of his co-ordination flies straight out of his little body. We've had scraped knees, teeth through lips (both at once - work that out!), head knocks, and tantrums where he inadvertantly hurts himself for not checking what was in his way first. Climbing furniture - book cases no less, into all of Grandad's things - not a good idea.

This morning I braved the shops once more to finally finish last minute christmas purchases and posting of the last of the christmas cards. We were there early so "J" could have a play on the playground before the rush, and it was all going so well. Until the noise level rose and the shops got busier. Then I started to notice that everyone else had their cranky faces on too! Though not the school kids - they looked pretty pleased that classes were over.

Maybe there is a special kind of air conditioning that is pumped into the shops to heighten everyones stress levels?

Funnily enough, as I am typing this I can feel some of the stress abating, and "J" well he's had a bottle and is lying under his fan - fast asleep. Me - I think a nice piece of chocolate is in order and some time surfing the net.

Looky, Looky

I have finished my stumpwork lessons for my 'go' at the pretty strawberries. It was such a good fun, the ladies in the class were ever so nice. Sandy (our teacher) has given me the instructions to put it all together, so I thought you might like to see a photo of them near completion.

I love the little bee near the flower heart. I have finished stitching all of the 3D pieces and now only have to attach them.

On the weekend we were at friends for dinner. "J" has had a naughty-ish week (I was told that the wind blowing affects kids in a BIG way). He is just into everything, and considers himself an adult and as such can do everything we can do. This photo was taken on the weekend when he discovered an organ at the friends house. Not content to look at it, he climbed up on the stool, opened the case, and turned it on to play! I know I must be firm, but sometimes - okay a lot of the time - he is just too cute. Later we did locate the key to the organ and locked him out of it.

Ssh, we need to be quiet - or is it that its so quiet that all noises seem louder than normal. "J" woke this morning wanting a milk top-up, so we roll out of bed at a quarter to two. I find myself still awake at 2:30am and then blogging at 3:30am. The house is quiet and I can hear some of the night birds doing their thing. Occasionally a car goes past its motor hushed. I now know for a fact that the newspaper delivery goes past at about 3pm as I heard the dull thump of the rolled paper hitting the grass. I love this time of the day, peaceful and with very quick wireless internet access - all the better. We live in a high usage area and at peak times I get booted off. Hopefully when I go back to sleep it will be restful and not the dead sleep where you wake later groggy and cranky - lol. So thankyou world for this, my quiet time.

Busy Few Days

The last couple of days have been a bit of a blur, and exciting in different ways. I was very lucky to have my newly made pouches in the latest Madeit e-newsletter that was sent on Wednesday. It was a lovely surprise that resulted in a few sales also.

On one the hottest days for Brisbane - yes I know Melbourne has been hotter - I was fortunate to lock myself away in an airconditioned room to do some sewing. "J" was at Kindy and it was a delight to have some time to work on his new quilt. Yes, I hear you , working on a quilt in this heat? I tend to do things like that.

Only feeling quite good about myself I didnt quite read all of the instructions carefully, and after I had sewn up my strips I realised that I was only to sew the 9 not the 18. So out came the unpicker.

Anywho, I wanted to share with you these photo's of "J" "mowing" the grass with his Grandad. It was a sight to be seen and I am so glad that I was quick enough to get the camera. "J" loves to have his photo taken and if he sees it, will pose. So candid shots are hard to get.

Yay! Mail Time!
I ordered my copy of Cath Kidston's "Sew" and it has finally arrived. Overseas has been raving for a couple of months, but australia couldnt release until November. So I shopped around (I wasn't paying the exorbitant price that some retail book stores were charging) and Fishpond helped me out yet again! I love this website.

Now I am just waiting the arrival of the next issue of Mixtape!

Open day at Thea + Sami's

Yesterday I had a lovely time meeting some of Brisbane's creative minds(and fingers).
Thea of Thea & Sami held an open day to show us just how she screen prints her gorgeous organic materials. It was great to see how the process really comes together, from design to print - with all of the steps in between. (Think screen processing, paint mixing and drying).
Only one downside to the day - I forgot to take my camera! So annoyed with myself.
Anywho the lovely people that I met are vetran market peoples and are sooo creative. Please check out these peeps! Melanie of Kimono Reincarnate, Teneale of Wicked Child Designs, Emma of Up in Annie's Room, , Daneve of Chicuff, Melissa of Taybian Designs,and Catherine of Celebrations Studio.

A Crafty Dude!

I had hoped this time would come. A day where a little man would take up craft. Didn't quite think it would be a 2 years, but hey I'm happy, happy, happy.

My mum and I have been on the lookout recently for age appropriate crafty ideas for "J", well today we found some Dr. Seuss lacing cards. You know, the kind with a picture and holes punched out around it. Even better it came with enough laces for all 8 cards.

So after kindy (I had left them in my room) "J" was having a ferret around - he always knows when I have been shopping - he found the box and took to it like a duck to water. I am so proud. Needless to say I took a few pictures and as you can tell, am gloating like a true parent. So here is my crafty dude.

I have great faith in my teacher, somewhat lesser faith in my ability of the total outcome, but what the heck I'll try my best!

Trying something new.

I am learning a something new. I have always admired Stumpwork embroidery; a type of embroidery that is done in 3D so the items jump out from the project; ( I even bought a book on it - but was too nervous to try it!) so I bit the bullet and signed up for a class with the Quilters and Embroideres' Store at Salisbury. Sandy (our teacher) is so very lovely; infact all of the staff there are lovely. As I am a beginner I have chosen to learn on a project that will look like a strawberry plant when finished, complete with a butterfly and bee. It's quite different to start a project using slik thread and cake decorating wire! I will post some photo's soon to show how it is all coming together.

Another great read

I have just finished another great read. The novel is called "The Whole Day Through" by Patrick Gale. So beautifully written, an elegant book full of compassion and longing for the things we all search for. This was such an enjoyable read. I could go on about it, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who may read it. Suffice to say - get it out from the library and enjoy.

I cant wait to go to the markets and use my new covered 'green - yes its actually blue' bag. When I bought this gorgeous material from Corrie (of retromummy) I just knew it had to be displayed. Lucky I decided to order a metre, as I had enough to make two. Just hope sister likes it. Plus there is probably enough to make one more if I really plan my cutting out. I was inspired to make these bags after one of the crafty ladies (from the crafty monday group) made one in horizontal stripes of yellow, pink and floral fabric. So with some pellon, some fabric and "J" down for a nap off I went, and I am so happy with the results! Best yet was that Coles has 'green' bags for sale in other colours. Now I just have to find some interestic fabric for the purple one I am thinking of buying. No, no, I really need to save and use things from my various stashes.

On an entirely different note, I just had to show you this photo of "J" and his Grandad. Grandad was working in the yard and "J" had to be there with him. Love the sets of ear muffs. "J" even sat there eating his lunch with them on - he wasnt taking them off for anyone.

I know it took a while for Stella to get her groove back, so too have I been waiting for my groove - creatively speaking of course. And finally it has returned!
Time seemed to be necessary, patience and self belief were needed too. So after selling and splitting the house, getting settled in a new place (or an old place as is my case, back at the family home), and having "J" used to living with his grandparents (and organising time for him with his Dad), I am finally starting to feel better!
A huge Thank you goes out to the bloggers of 'blog-land'. I love reading all of your words of wisdom being of either profound comments or the easiest way to make bias binding. It has helped immensely.

Well all of the mail has come in and my shopping spree is officailly over. Time to start saving again . . . . although there is a new Cath Kidston book coming out so we will see! (sorry about the fuzzy photo)

I saw these gorgeous earrings on a Madeit e-newsletter and thought they were so cute. I was sure they had sold out, but no, I was very lucky.

Then the last of my fishpond order arrived so movie night will be soon. I loved this movie when it came out. The fashions and the intrigues of the era make for a cosy evening.

Woke up this morning to find that the courier had left a parcel at my door. Yay! Another book from fishpond. This time I have received Kelly Rae Roberts book - "Taking Flight" about creating a creative journey. I feel I need a kick start to get my creativity back on track.

Ooh . . . but yesterday was a most exciting day too! The fabric I had ordered from Retromummy arrived. I love her (Corrie's) taste in fabric. Check out the retromummy blog here, or her store here.

I cant wait to use this fabric. After a conversation with one of the Monday crafter's (on monday - funny that) I have learnt the way to cover a 'green' shopping bag to make it more personal, and not have free advertising on my things. Yay, I am very excited to show you the fabric that I have ordered (and received) from the Haby Goddess, Jodie! She has such excellent taste! You can read her blog here, or visit her shop here.

I also purchased some of her brooch backings and cant wait to start making some new brooches for little christmas presents. I know, I know its way to early to even think about that, but this year I want to do some handmade gifts unrushed for a nice change.

Yep more money spent over the internet. I think I may have to limit myself, but I keep finding all of these beautiful fabrics, and that little voice inside of me says "go on, you know you need it". And who am I to ignore that voice. So todays money was spent well. Wont show you yet but will give you a sneak peak.

Also yesterday afternoon I received a gift voucher from Fishpond. As you know I am a book girl so that was spent straight away. I am so going to love collecting the mail in the week to come.

Gosh I love the internet. Where else can you shop in your pj's with a big cup of tea. Oh alright today I am not in my pj's. I had to take "J" to kindy so real clothes were called for. But the big cup of tea still rings true!

How I love books . .

How I love books. Can there be anything more satisfying than reading a book. A book that warms your soul and comes alive inside you. I have found such a book. Being on the library waiting list for the last four-ish months has paid off. If you want a beautiful book to read I definitely recommend "The Good Mayor" by Andrew Nichol. I am only about a third of the way through but, I just had to share it with you. Oh so beautiful written and the emotions so true. (On the other hand if you didn't like it please ignore my ramblings.

Total shift in genre. Who doesn't love a good cookbook? The mouth watering photo's make it all the better. Truth be told I have been known to have an aversion to cook books without pic's.

Yesterday while "J" and I were in Big W, I happened upon the new cook book by Sue Shepherd - "The Gluten-free Kitchen". I have all of her others so this was a must for me. All I can say is yummy, yummy, yummy! I haven't made any of them yet but am hoping this weekend "J" and I will have a baking bonanza. I whole hearted agree that cooking with a 2 year old is an experience. He has only just learnt about licking the icing spatula, and liked it so much he bit the end off. Yes then the panic came as I wrenched the poor plastic piece out of his mouth. This time I think I will play it safer by letting him lick the beaters instead.

Spring and Magazines

Yesterday I attended my first 'Spring Ladies Lunch', and what a delight it was! So fun to dress up and sip champagne (or orange juice), whilst meeting new friends and delighting in it all. A huge shout out to Margie who hosted us and catered so beautifully. I nearly died when dessert was presented - summer berries with vanilla yoghurt, coolis and cream. All served in fine china dishes and eaten with silver spoons.

Today I found a great spring magazine to read. Technically it is classed as a summer issue - being as it is a British Magazine and was published in their July weather. I havent picked up a copy of "Country Living" before, but I can see it will become one of my fav'es.

This article reminded be so much of Thea's designs of Thea & Sami, that I just had to post it.

So whilst "J" is having his after lunch nap, I am boiling the kettle to read with a cuppa, and sit in the sunshine!

A new bag for spring.

Hello,

The days are warming up and all thoughts turn to the sun's warmth and lots of ice-cream!

I have finally finished my version of one of Amy Butler's Tote bag, from her softwares collection. I was so excited when I realised that I could perchase her fabric to make this bag at a shop locally. (see previous post of 'finds') The only thing I couldnt buy was the same type of interfacing that are available in the States, so I bought what I figured would be ok.

Turns out it was not quite, but with a little template plastic and some extra re-inforced handle stitching, it has turned out quite well. I was going to use this tote as an everyday bag, but once I loaded it down with all of my junk and "J"s things (sandwich container, water bottle, wet wipes) I was a little bit unsure how it would hold the weight. So it is now my 'new' sewing bag! With all of the inside pockets I can squirrel away bits and pieces, plus it looks great too.

(So many pockets!)

Bring on the warmer weather, sunshine and dont forget the ice-cream!

The Bus didn't come . . . .

Today I am suppossed to be on a bus. A special bus, a Queen Beez bus, a bus to take myself and 17 others on a trip to Boonah and surrounds. A bus that would take us for morning tea. A bus that would show us the thrifty/crafy/arty places of the Boonah area. As I say supposed tobe on a bus.

The first excuse was that "they -bus company" double booked, then "they" organised another one, then "they" sayit got lost.

As I said I was suppossed to be on a bus.

On a completely different track - Does anyone know how to get a 2 year-old to go to sleep? I know, I hear you laughing!

Quiet & Sewing

It's a beautiful sunday morning, the sun is shining, the radio on in the background and the hum of the sewing machine. "J" is with his father and I have the opportunity to have some uninterrupted sewing time. Time to finish the many 'U.F.Os' mixed in my fabric stash. So many ideas running through my head, of softies, bags, and things - of cabbages and kings (as the walrus says to the carpenter in Alice in Wonderland).

Earlier in the year I was the winner of a SEWN giveaway from So Bella Boutique. The gorgeous Tula Pink "neptune" charm squares have finally made it into a quilt. Perfect to be on the end of the bed in the summer time with their seaside/ocean theme.

This quilt was made quite thriftily. The sashing around the squares was from my mums stash and so was the wadding - pieced together from her offcuts. I bought the border and backing fabric from a local shop. All in all it was done well I think!

I have finally sewn d dust cover envelope for my laptop. The cherry fabric was bought for a dress I still havent cut out, but I couldnt resist it. Everytime I see the cherries it makes me smile and lets face it we all need to do more of that.

So off to put 'the kettle on' to sit and sip and smile a bit more.

Fantastic Finds

I heard the other day of a fantastic shop on the south-side of Brisbane called the Quilters and Embroiderers Store. So off I trundled yesterday afternoon - the little man was at Kindy- to have a quick look. Quick look be damned. I spent nearly two hours there. It was fantastic!!! Everything I wanted and more. They had thousands of bolts of fabric and more DMC threads than I knew existed, Patterns from around the world and gifts and basics aplenty. I know frst hand as I spent up big and want to go back to buy some more. This shop has serious fabric stash potential in my box.

I was able to see and purchase fabrics that I didnt know Brisbane had, I was becoming despondent thinking I would have to order fabric online from down south but was worried that I might not like my selection.

They have Amy Butler (shelves of it), Kaffe Fasset, Heather Bailey, 1930 Repro, and so much more. Panels for baby quilts and oh-so-soft flannels for winter quilts. I dont think I would ever go to spotlight again (except fot the basics - calico etc). I saw so many gorgeous fabrics to have another go at making my Simplicity top.

So here is what I bought home - "Weekend Sewing" by Heather Ross, Mid weight and Heavy weight Interfacing, Daisy Chain and Happy Dots from the Amy Butler range, and two gorgeous prints from the 1930's Repro. Now all I have to do is use all of this up to have a excuse to return!

I forgot to add the other day that I received a great parcel from Sally of Grendelskin the other day. Oh so sorry Sally that it took me this long to post. Sally was the winner of my "Sewn Giveaway" in May/June. Such a thoughtful person, Sally sent me a beautiful thankyou parcel. From one 'hexie addict' to another, Sally sent lovely scraps of fabric perfect for hexagon piecing, and some lovely vintage buttons - oh how I love buttons! Sorry no photo's as I added these to my stash straight away. Off to piece.

Sewing for me!

Hello, I have just finished sewing something for me! I tend to do more craft sewing than clothes sewing, so I decided to try something for me for a change. I found a Simplicity easy-to-sew pattern #3799, and bought some light poly-cotton material and sewed to my hearts content. I am especially proud of this top because I didnt call out to mum when I had no idea what the instructions meant! It took me longer to make, but I wanted to do it all by myself. (Sounds like a typical 5 year old statement).

I can honestly say that I now understand that when 'they' mean pin you pin and when 'they' say press you use the iron. Come to think of it , its probably why all of my other clothes sewing attempts have been slightly askew. So here is a picture of my top - it looks better on than on the hanger - as I havent perfected the "photo in the mirror" yet.

I am itching to do some more clothes sewing, but with my car at the mechanics it is probably for the best so I wont spend all of my money on more material!

Shopping at the fair

The day was great the money was plentiful, and I bought some things! The Vintage Fair was lovely. In fact the whole family went. Well the son only stayed until his Dad got there, so the stall holders can sigh a relief with no grubby two year old finger marks on their wares.

My sister found a beautiful dress made in the 1970's which fit her like a glove. It was if it was made for her. Strappy with a full skirt - perfect for a wedding she is going to later in the year. My mum bought a couple of pieces of material - one being a Liberty print - she snapped that one up pretty quickly! My dad bought 2 ties. One being the standard, the other being a bow tie. He doesnt wear them (bows that is) but I suspect he has quite a collection.

Me, I bought a pattern ($2), fabric ($3), buttons ($1 a scoop - I bought 2 scoops), 2 linen hankerchiefs ($4 for the pair) and a treasure package ($10), which had all manner of things - doilies, lace, buttons, ribbon.

It was great to browse and chat with the stall holders. One of them even remembered me from last time. And yes I spent quite a bit of time in her fabric and button stall this time too!

Its the start of a herd. . . .

Another unicorn to add to now make a herd. I was asked to make one for my ex husbands - mother's -friend's -grand daughter. If you got all of that congrats, 'cause it took me awhile to work it out. I loved the fabric my mother-in-law chose very girly (plus I got to keep the excess). I already have another order. My sister wants one for a friend whose expecting. "But can I have it without the horn and the wings?" My response "So you want a horse?"

Looking forward to going to the "What we wear - Vintage Fair" tomorrow at the Mt Gravatt Show grounds. Starts at 10am if you'd like to go. Hopefully I will buy some goodies and will post them tomorrow night for a show and tell.

Off to bed for me now, I bought some books from Fishpond the other day and am eager to start reading Deanna Rabourn's "Silent in the Grave".

Many, many parcels

This week has been a bit on the hectic side in relation to my blogging (or lack there of, as the case may be). I have been holding off blogging until my very own - brand new - laptop arrived. Which it did, yesterday. Then for the endless calls to an internet carrier and the purchase of a 'stick'. I can do all of my blogging, shopping, gossip hunting, and more shopping in the comfort of my nice and cosy electric blanketed bed. and yes I realise that being a Queenslander I have no right to complain about the cold, but hey I think I just did anyway.

So back to my title and main point. I have been saving up some photos to post so please bear with me there are a few.

Postal day yesterday was exciting - laptop. But all of this week has been excellent. I have had parcels everyday. It started with a few books arriving from fishpond (excellent website by the way and cheaper than the bookstores and they do free postage on orders over $50). For once I ordered fiction books, instead of the usual craft ones. Then on Tuesday I received my copy of "Amy Butler's Softwares" from Maree of Oz Quilts. Super fast delivery as I only ordered it on the friday before. I was going to wait to order it after I received my laptop, but I just couldnt wait.

Then I really got a surprise in the post! I was a lucky winner of the "Sewn giveaway" extravaganza that went around the world. My parcel was coming all the way from Canada from So Bella Boutique. What an amazing parcel!! A whole yard/metre of a gorgeous Moda fabric (which I will use in a bag pattern - you guessed it Amy Butler of course). 34 cahrm squares from Tula Pink's 'Neptune' range. Groovy bias binding bundles, and a super cute hair clip. Spoilt definately!!

But my week hasnt all been about the post. I also finished my scarf I was knitting. I am only a very beginner with knitting. The only stitch I know being knit/plain. But this scarf added a new dimesion to my skills. I had to learn a double drop stitch. After a few false starts I was able to do it . Big thanks to my Mum who came to the resuce when I dropped to many stitches and agin when I somehow added more. So I hope you like it. I bought it in a kit form complete with pattern, yarn, and bamboo needles. The instructions were in German first, then French, followed my a small Englidh translation at the bottom. I am quite please with myself for this and will attempt some more knitting in the future.

So that being my news, apologies for the novel. I will snuggle down further in bed.

Its a Polka Dot Day!

Today has been a great day! Parcel Day!!

The lovely Kat of kats creations has sent me a gorgeous assortments of 'dots' and things.

Upon opening the parcel I found a beautiful tote,

and so many goodies!

The mobile phone/ipod holder is great, and the fabrics so pretty, but as all crafter's know one can never have too many craft magazines.

Thank you Kat for being so generous. I am off to have a cuppa and curl up on the couch with my Polka Dot Swap goodies.

Hello,

Sorry have been a bit lax with posting. Life has been hectic again. Two year old's tantrums, the house settling, and dividing not only money but household possessions!

But I can report that I have been a-crafting at night to create a sense of balance in my life. (Thats what I'm calling it anyway). I am off to the post office this morning to send of my first parcel for the "Polka Dot Swap". I have loved making this and hope it will be liked by my swap partner. I must confess that I only took one photo of it and to display it on here would be giving the secret away. so next month I will take a 'sneaky' shot so as not to ruin the surprise.

So off I go to stand in the queue, and then onto the crafty monday "Queen Bees" craft group.

I have finally been able to get a photo of those secretive unicorns. all dressed and mane brushed hiding in my spare room (of all places to find one!)

But seriously, I had a lot of fun making this unicorn. As always the Melly & Me pattern was easy to follow and inspiring aswell. This pretty is going to be a 3rd birthday present for a niece who loves "My Little Ponies". So I hope this will be a success.

Crafty Thursday - Ladies High Tea

Today the 'Monday Crafters' went on a bit of an outing. We visited the lovely Mt Tamborine (just up from the Gold Coast). Not only did we "do" the Gallery Walk - think boutique wines, fudge and shopping - but we also had a lovely High Tea at "Tea & Niceties".

I have never had a High Tea before, and let me tell you it was fantastic. Beautiful sandwiches, oh so soft scones and petit fours to the ceiling! Silver service, Royal Albert cups and saucers, Damask Tablecloths, and sugar cubes with sugar roses on them. (And they do Gluten Free - just advise when booking).The tea was for about 2 hours and believe me you need that time to enjoy the yummies. Of course talking with friends the time flies by!

There's a hex on my house

Recently I have been a 'tad' addicted to hand sewing hexagons. What started out using up my scrap fabric to start a 'may not be finished for a few years quilt', has turned into finding others scraps to add to my collection of hexies. So far I have raided my mum's scrap stash and will soon raid others from the Monday Craft Group.

I have started sewing the hundreds of paper pieces hexies into groups of sevens. Today I thought it would be a lark to count how many piles of sevens I have. I got to 47. Yep, you do the math. Works out to be 329 hexies - and I still have more to be sewn into sevens. When the telly is on I can be found surrounded by hexies and cotton.

Thought you might like to see them (the 47 sevens that is). As it is a scrap quilt there is not rhyme or reason to the colour placement. I am itching to start sewing the 47's together, but I know I should hold off until I have more sevens made. Hope you like them.
